Hi ,
A message from our presenter, Rav Yehuda HaKohen:
-----
When analyzing Israeli politics, most outsiders (and
even many Israelis) tend to apply Western political framings in a way that ultimately doesn’t fit our society. Labels like liberal, conservative, religious and secular are unique to Western civilization and helpful for understanding political issues and divisions in certain countries but fall short when applied to societies with radically different identities, histories and worldviews.
The people of Israel actually have an
ancient method for understanding the social and political divisions within our society based on our primordial tribal identities. Despite the fact that many Jews no longer know what Israelite tribes they biologically descend from, these tribal identities still manifest within our people through various socio-political tribes that for the most part find representation through the political factions that make up Israel’s complicated political system.
Ahead of the upcoming Knesset elections, it’s important that we make efforts to demystify Israel’s tribal political map and examine how each of the tribal forces within our collective national identity contribute to the Jewish people’s development and proper function.
